How to Compare or Estimate Your Developer Salary

As a developer, the question of salary expectations inevitably comes up during an interview, whether you're junior, mid-level, or senior.

While you start to know your worth in terms of salary as you progress in your career, the first estimates are always tricky to come up with.

And yet you absolutely have to do it!

To help you out, there are sites that offer estimates based on certain criteria to give you an average salary so that you can position yourself according to your profile.

The problem is that the numbers vary enormously depending on technologies, experience, and location, and most estimation tools don't necessarily take all these criteria into account...

A new barometer

Released last week, the recruitment site WeLoveDevs, well known to developers looking for a job, has published its brand new developer salary barometer!

There are several interesting things in this barometer, including:

• The choice of jobs, technologies, and keywords in a flexible way
• The choice of city, without geographic or size limits
• The choice of experience level (junior, mid-level, senior)
• The confidence index based on the amount of data available for the search

But what makes the difference for me in terms of data accuracy and transparency is the emphasis on the median (instead of the average found on other sites) as well as the graph-based view to observe the distribution across salary brackets.

The median salary is much more representative than the average because it's less influenced by variance, giving figures that are closer to reality.
