7 Freelance Platforms for Developers

When starting out as a freelancer, the first step to take is finding a mission to get your foot in the door.

Of course, it's possible to rely solely on your existing professional network to find your first mission, but this isn't always possible when you're just starting out in the job market, or if your professional network isn't centered around the digital world.

Fortunately, over the past few years we've seen numerous platforms connecting companies and freelancers, often specialized in the world of development, which greatly facilitates launching your new career.

#1 - Pylote

Unlike the rest of the list, Pylote isn't really a mission platform, but it's better than that!

Keeping your profiles and availability up to date on multiple freelance platforms is tedious and, above all, time-consuming! Thanks to the free Pylote extension, you enter (or import) your information once, and all the platforms are synchronized like magic!

#2 - Malt

This is THE go-to platform because it's both the most comprehensive in terms of freelancers and available missions, but also because it's possible to find missions even as a junior developer.

Additionally, Malt ensures you're paid within 48 hours after your mission ends, but be careful, you'll have to pay a 10% commission on the total of your invoices (this is fairly standard), but given the number of opportunities the platform can bring you, it's well worth it!

#3 - Comet

Comet arrived on the market more recently, yet the platform is enjoying strong success even though the platform is more specialized than Malt, as it targets more experienced developers.

If you're more interested in long-term missions (rather staffing-type engagements) than short missions for small clients, then I recommend giving Comet a chance!

#4 - Crème de la crème

Originally only accessible to profiles fresh out of engineering schools, the platform has opened up more broadly over time, while still maintaining a more selective vision regarding both freelance profiles and companies.

By the way, you can't sign up directly, you have to "apply" to access the platform.

If you're an expert in your field and want to work for prestigious and attractive companies, give it a try! Note that the platform advances you the entire amount of your invoice as soon as the mission launches, and also gives you access to many benefits and third-party services.

#5 - Freelance Republik

On Freelance Republik, you complete your profile, then you must go through a series of steps before being recommended to companies: interview, technical test, reference check, and legal verifications.

Then, if you're selected, you'll join the 8000+ profiles who have the chance to work with companies like ManoMano, Dashlane, Deezer, SeLoger, Eurosport, etc...

This is one of the most selective platforms (around 1/4 of profiles are selected)

#6 - Codeur.com

This platform has a completely different philosophy because missions are offered as auctions, with a maximum budget.

Freelancers must therefore make a bid, and are put in direct competition from the list of offers, with the option to hide the amount proposed for the mission.

I'm not particularly in favor of this type of marketplace, which often drives prices down, but if some feel comfortable using it to grow their business, then why not!

#7 - Upwork

Upwork is the international go-to platform for finding freelancers all over the world. Like codeur.com, it offers a bidding system similar to auctions (which is actually fairly common in the English-speaking world), but I find the implementation less competitive.

On it you'll find $45 projects as well as missions for experts within certain major tech companies, you'll need to know how to choose your missions well... and speak English, of course!
