The 3 essential tools for web development from an iPad

I know that reading the title, some developers are already choking...

What? Developing on a single screen? Less than 13 inches? Without a keyboard? That's madness!

So yes, of course, this isn't a replacement option for a desktop machine or a good laptop. But for prototype development that's on your mind, in sometimes unlikely places and when you've left your machine at home, the iPad is clearly a backup solution!

You still need the right tools though:

This is clearly the essential tool for developing on a tablet. An online code editor, with the ability to run many languages in the sandbox.

The strong points:

• Free
• Deployment of code to a test url
• Boilerplates are available for most popular frameworks
• Integration with Github for versioning

Bluetooth Keyboard: Logitech K380

The biggest obstacle to enjoying developing (occasionally) on iPad was obviously the virtual keyboard.

Even though it's possible to type a fair number of words per minute (with practice), I personally develop an aversion to the sensation of rapid tapping on the screen after about ten minutes.

Using my iPad more and more for writing in general, I opted for the K380 Bluetooth keyboard from Logitech, whose size is perfect for fitting into a bag, while offering a comfortable typing position.

If you're sensitive to details, the rounded shape of the keys will remind the more nostalgic among us of typewriter keys.

It's compatible with iOS, Android, Mac and PC for a price between 50 and 70 euros. I don't necessarily recommend investing in a bluetooth keyboard if you only plan to play around with codesandbox, but if you write regularly on iPad (which is my case), I strongly recommend it!

SSH App: Termius

Now we're talking about an app for those who want to push the vice even further!

Codesandbox gives you the ability to deploy a test back-end and front-end, which is nice. But what if we did our own deployment directly from the ipad?

The Termius app lets you establish an ssh connection with any server you've set up.

All you need to do now is install Git, clone the project onto your server and use your favorite deployment method, just as you would from your regular machine and... There you go!
